On Saturday May 7th, students all over the world will sit the SAT. This test, administered by the College Board, is one of two standardised tests students can take for their US university applications.
The SAT is a multiple-choice test that attempts to measure a student’s reasoning ability in both mathematics and reading. Though imperfect, this test helps universities compare students to each other in a competitive admissions review process. Thus, students should plan to prepare for the SAT at least four-to-six months in advance.
When Vela Education advisors meet with students, they often wonder how many times they can take the test! Though there isn’t a limit on the number of times you can take the test, we do recommend thoughtful test taking!
In our strategic consultations, we do let students know they should plan to take the SAT at least twice. There are good reasons for planning at least two sittings! One, students rarely hit their goal score the first time. This initial sitting is often for due diligence. Students develop an understanding of how they perform under testing conditions and also get an official report indicating what areas you need to improve on for the next exam.
Vela advisors also recommend students sit the test for a second time because of the “Super Score” advantage. Most universities, though not all, will allow students to send the highest score from different sections of the test! Thus, taking the test twice increases the chance that your overall score will be higher when you send your scores to the school.
However, after taking the test twice, if you still have not reached your goal score—what should you do? Vela advisors do recommend that you take the test a third time. However, we do recommend that this is the last time you take the test. We have found that after three sittings, student scores actually go down. Students become frustrated and this is counter-productive! Vela advisors will speak honestly with you about how your scores will be reviewed in your overall application and how you should move forward.
Even if you do not achieve your goal score, don’t worry. Many top US universities have authentic test-optional policies. Vela Education advisors are happy to help you develop an application strategy for these excellent schools. Please reach out to us. We are here to help.
