The school year has started again and university application deadlines loom! For a whole host of reasons, some students suddenly become interested in US universities at the beginning of their final year of secondary school. Those UCAS applications are due, and students have chosen a subject. Maybe something changed and students feel they can no longer commit to a singular path or they would like the opportunity to explore other areas. Either way, a liberal arts education and campus life in the US starts to be more appealing.
The liberal arts education at US colleges allows students more flexibility with their studies. US college students are able to take a range of subjects whether or not they have decided on their chosen field. For those that are more set in their path, this provides students with a wonderful opportunity to stretch their learning even as they focus on a specific subject. For example, in the US you can study engineering and also have a minor in theatre! For students that are still exploring their intellectual interests, they don’t have to declare a major (a course of study) until the end of their second year.
However, it is September. There is a lot of work to do on US university applications, but Vela Education is here to guide you through it. It might feel overwhelming but here are the steps to take:
Plan and Strategise
At Vela Education, we want to create the best plan for each student, and our strategic consultation can help you to get started on this path right away. During our one-hour meeting, we can set out the student’s expectations for the process and can advise as to the best course of action. We will review your academic profile, extra-curricular activities, and start to create a list of schools that will fit what you are looking for in your university experience.
Communicate
Your secondary school will need to know that you are applying to the US. You will need to ask two teachers for recommendation letters. Your school will also need to prepare your transcripts and counsellor letter. So let them know ASAP!
Testing
Testing is important for a lot of US colleges. Vela Education can help you decide if this is a route you need to go down. If it is, we work with some top tutors that can help you reach your goal score. Testing might not be for you and our advisors would be happy to help you with a test optional pathway.
Start Writing
The essays are the most time-consuming aspect of the Common App and should not be left to the last minute. There is still time to prepare a strong US application but the sooner you start, the better!
A useful place to start is our timeline which will give you a good idea of the tasks that need to be completed. Vela Education is here to help in anyway we can!
