What to do This Summer

Though we are still in the middle of winter, it isn’t too early to think about what you should do this summer. Summers are excellent times to explore your passions and develop your CV. At Vela Education, we know that successful applicants think of the process as a four-year plan.

If you are planning to apply to selective US universities, Vela Education recommends you use the summer to investigate US universities and do the activities that impress admissions committees. Consider doing the following:

A US university summer program: For students who are not very familiar with the US education system or have spent very little time in the States, attending a summer program on a US university campus is a great idea. Taking classes, and meeting other students can help you determine if applying to US universities is right for you! Both applying to, and ultimately attending, a US university is a serious time and financial investment. These summer programs allow students to learn first-hand what their future university experience might feel like. Attending these programmes is especially recommended for students who have not spent a great deal of time in the States. US student and campus culture is unique! Experiencing it provides valuable insight. Vela Education is happy to help you pick the right programme for you and to help you complete the application process.

Do a US university tour: Even amongst the most selective US universities, there are significant differences in ethos, pedagogy, campus environment, and student life. Though virtual tours and speaking with admissions reps offer insights into these aspects of US university life, stepping onto a campus is the best way to determine if it is a good fit! Vela Education advisors would be happy to help you plan a tour, so you have a clear idea about what schools are right for you.

Get a summer job: US university admissions committees value work experience! These summer internships, or even paid jobs, should be substantial amount of time—at least three weeks long. Also, rather than shadow someone at a large organisation, it’s actually better to work for a smaller company or org so you can take on real responsibility. Also, it’s great to do something age appropriate: work in a café, start a dog walking service, run a neighbourhood summer camp for younger students. Vela Education advisors are happy to discuss how you can turn your interests into a great summer job.

SAT and ACT Prep: If you are taking your GCSE or MYP exams this spring, you should start to prep for the SAT or ACT this summer. The first step is to take a diagnostic test. We recommend Prep Scholar for this step! With this baseline score, work with a private tutor to develop a test-prep to meet your goal score. Vela Education is proud to work with professional tutors who we trust!

These are just a few ideas of how you might want to spend your summer if you plan to apply to US universities. If you want more information or a personalised plan, consider scheduling a strategic consultation
