US Universities and Athletic Scholarships

Along with enviable academics and global reach, international students are often interested in US universities so they can attend school on an athletic scholarship. It is true that US universities have strong athletic programmes, not available in other international higher education systems. Also, for some students, playing their sport at a US university is the only way to compete at a serious level.

Yet, there is a lot of misinformation about US college sports and athletic recruitment. At Vela Education, we offer transparent and ethical advice to students, families, and schools so they can make an informed choice.

Here are Vela’s Educations top tips for prospective student athletes:

Start Early: During year 10, you should research the rules that govern US university sports. The NCAA, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, is a non-profit which regulates athletic competitions and recruitment at over 1,000 US schools! Visit their website and review their information regarding athletic recruitment.

Embrace your sport! Coaches are looking for committed athletes who have consistently excelled in their chosen sport.

Research schools with athletic and academic programmes that appeal to you. Being a college athlete is a huge commitment, but you will still primarily be a student for four years!

Seek Feedback: It’s wonderful to be passionate about your sport and have a dream! However, seek professional feedback about your potential. Even as early as year 10 and 11, speak to your coaches about your intention to play your sport at a US university. They will give you sound advice about how you might fare and what you can do to approve your chances. Also, reach out to the coaches at the school’s you are interested in! Politely enquire about their athletic and academic benchmarks so you can stay focused on your goals. Also, consider attending a skills camp or athletic showcase to receive more training and feedback from professionals in the field. The NCSA provides great advice about the role these programmes play in the recruitment process.

Make a Family Decision: Committing to study in the US, even as an athlete, is still a commitment the whole family makes. Also, though you may hope for a full scholarship, those are considerably more rare than most people realize. IF you do not receive a scholarship, can you still afford to pay? Do this research before you have eliminated other less costly options in your home county.

Be a Good Student: Though you may be very focused on the sport you love, you will still need to meet the academic benchmarks to be a recruited athlete!  Most teams have a minimum academic benchmark all students need to meet. Also, most coaches will immediately ask you for and SAT or ACT score. Prepare and take these important exams!

If you have any questions about US university athletic recruitment, or any aspect of the US university admissions process, consider scheduling a strategic consultation. This working meeting provides clear feedback and a detailed plan so you can take thoughtful next steps.
