International students are interested in US universities because of the unique offerings of an American education. However, even though studying abroad in the US is about immersing yourself in another culture, international students often like to know they are not alone in this new experience.
When Vela Education advisors meet with students, they often ask which US schools have the most robust international populations. We appreciate that this can be a deciding factor for many students. We aim to provide the most reliable and transparent information so students, families, and schools can make the best decisions for them.
It’s no surprise that several schools in New York State have the highest percentage of international students. However, international students are not just interested in urban areas. The University of Rochester, in upstate New York, is near the very top of the list with 27% of the students coming from countries outside the US. However, the draw of New York City is undeniable, and NYU is proud to have a student body with 24% international students. Columbia University also boasts the most international students in the Ivy League with 17% international students.
Another popular destination for students, both domestic and international, is Boston. With more college students per capita than any other city in the US, international students are likely to have students from their home countries to connect with in the city. Boston University has the most international students in Bean Town with 21% of the student body coming from countries outside of the US. Another school that attracts a substantial number of international students is Brandeis! International students comprise 20% of the student body at this stellar school in the Boston suburbs. Also, Northeastern University, a school that is becoming increasingly popular and thus increasingly selective, has a student body with 16% international students.
However, geography doesn’t always dictate where international students will thrive. Excellent academics with strengths in both STEM and the humanities makes Carnegie Mellon, in Pittsburgh PA, a top choice for many international students—to the tune of 21% of the student body! Emory University in Atlanta Georgia is also a destination for international students, with 15% of the students coming from countries outside of the US.
Though some students may think that attending a large research university in a city is the best way to have a community of fellow international students, that isn’t true! Small schools in the US also have robust international student communities. If you are a young woman who wants to have small classes and mentorship from professors, Mount Holyoke might be the best place for you. This original “seven sisters” school has 28% international students. Also, small schools in the mid-west attract international students! Grinnell College, in Iowa, has a student body with 19% international students! And Bennington College, in rural Vermont, also has 19% international students.
