Ivy League and selective universities want to see the following on applications:

1. Rigorous courses and perfect grades: Though there are many differences between the US and UK university admissions process, one thing they have in common is that grades are the cornerstone of both applications. For international students, this means top GCSE results and excellent A-Level or IB predictions. The most selective schools in the world are looking for the best grades. GCSE scores below an 8 could present an obstacle in the review process. An IB prediction of 43 or higher is also a good benchmark as is three or four A* for A-Level predictions. The courses a student  takes also matter to Ivy League and other extremely selective schools. Taking the most rigorous courses available at your school is important. Also, Vela Education recommends that students choose courses that align with the core US secondary school curriculum. 2. Strong extracurricular profile: Ivy League schools and other selective universities review the activities section of the Common Application. Closely. They want to see commitment, depth, and breadth. The most competitive and prestigious schools want you to pursue your interests at a high level and have outcomes clearly explained on your application. If you are part of an academic society, take a leadership position and plan a community-wide event with a professional speaker. If you are a creative writer, work to have your pieces published in student-friendly journals. If you play a sport, ensure that you are competing at the highest level!

3. Leadership: The most selective schools want to see leadership qualities on your application. Students who hope to attend an Ivy League school or one of equivalent calibre, should seek leadership positions within their school communities and within their wider communities. US university admissions committees believe these positions require initiative and responsibility—qualities that are very important to US universities.

3. Impact: An Ivy League education provides an unparalleled platform to impact others in a positive way. With enviable resources and training, Ivy league and other prestigious US universities are looking for students who will use these opportunities and resources to create change in their communities. Signalling your desire to use your education to improve the world helps the admissions committee believe you should have the opportunity to join the community. The proof you can do this must be found in the activities section of your Common App.
