How many times should you take the SAT or ACT?

Students who want to apply to selective US universities often wonder how many times they should take the SAT or ACT.  These tests are the two standardized exams that can be an important data point when US universities review student applications.

Both tests are multiple-choice and aim to measure a student’s reasoning ability in both mathematics and reading. Though controversial and  imperfect, these test helps universities compare students to each other in a competitive admissions review process.  Even with more and more test-optional universities, strong test scores are still an asset to a student’s application. Thus, it is wise to prepare for these exams four-to-six months before sitting and official test.

Vela Education advisors are often asked how many times a student can, or should, take these tests. Though there isn’t a limit on the number of times you can take the test, we do recommend that students only take the test up to three times.

In our strategic consultations, we do stress that students should plan to one of these tests at least twice. There are good reasons for planning at least two sittings! One, students rarely hit their goal score the first time. This initial sitting is often for due diligence. Students develop an understanding of how they perform under testing conditions and also get an official report indicating what areas you need to improve on for the next exam.

Two, Vela advisors also recommend students sit the test for a second time because of the “Super Score” advantage. Most universities, though not all, allow students to send the highest score from different sections of the test! Thus, taking the test twice increases the chance that your overall score will improve!

However, after taking the test twice, and you have not reached your ideal score, —what should you do? Vela advisors recommend that you take the test a third time. However, this should be your final test sitting. We have found that after three sittings, student scores actually go down. Students become frustrated and this is counter-productive! Vela advisors will honestly assess what is the best strategy for your application and help you make the best decision as you move forward.

Even if you do not achieve your goal score, don’t worry. Many top US universities have authentic test-optional policies. Vela Education advisors are happy to help you develop an application strategy for these excellent schools. Please reach out to us. We are here to help.
