The SAT is a standardised tests that helps universities compare you to other students in the applicant pool. The test assesses a student’s skills in three areas: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. It is a multiple-choice exam that is offered on specific dates both in the US and internationally.

The ACT is a standardised tests that helps universities compare you to other students in the applicant pool. The ACT has four sections: English, Reading, Math, and Science. It’s a three-hour exam that requires students to answer questions quickly! For international students, this exam is only offered on a computer. through the entire application cycle.
The SAT and ACT still play an important role in the US university admissions process. Strong test scores are still an asset to a student’s application. However, if students discover through the diagnostic and test prep process that the SAT or ACT does not adequately represent their academic potential, there are test-optional policies which may work in their favour.
Even before the Covid-19 Pandemic, many highly selective and excellent schools had test-optional or test-flexible policies. This means, students can submit applications without standardized testing results and still be highly competitive candidates. Since the pandemic started, even more schools have developed thoughtful test-optional pathways and have continued these into 2024.
The US University admissions process is best thought of as a four-year plan. Making thoughtful decisions at every stage ensures you have the best possible options.
